I’m originally from Falmouth, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, but I lived in San Diego, California for 15 years prior to moving to Playa Del Carmen in September 2014.
I did a study abroad program in Sevilla, Spain for a year while studying at UMASS Amherst and I fell in love with the Spanish language and culture. It was a liberating experience being away from home and traveling around Europe. I have always wanted to live in a Latin country again after that experience.
When I graduated from UMASS, my older brother, Rich, had already moved to San Diego, so I decided to get away from the cold, New England Winters and join him. It was also a great opportunity for me to practice Spanish as Southern California has a high population of Spanish Speakers.
My first job was with AT&T as a bilingual customer service and sale representative. I did that for 5 years before starting a career as a Mortgage Loan Officer and working for my brother.
After a near death experience in a horrible car accident in Feb 2008, I decided to go back to school to become a bilingual teacher. I was really attracted to the idea of using Spanish again and having more vacation time to travel around. I studied at UAG in Guadalajara for 6 months and fell in love with Mexico.
My first trip to the Riviera Maya and the Caribbean was to visit a friend who was renting a house in Cozumel. We got bored in Cozumel after a few nights and decided to spend a few nights in Playa del Carmen. I immediately was hooked on Playa del Carmen and couldn’t wait to come back.
When we came back on the next trip my wife fell in love with it here, also. We also discovered that a friend of mine was working and living here and doing well for himself in sales. That put in the back of our minds that we could probably live and work here as well, but we went back to our daily grind of working 60 hour weeks in San Diego.
Eventually, we were both a little burned out and had the discussion to move down here. We both agreed that we would give it two years to see how it goes and the rest is history. It was an easy decision as I’m fluent in Spanish and my wife is Mexican from Tijuana.
I have never been happier in my life. I feel very fortunate to have a great wife and beautiful, healthy daughter. I love sharing my knowledge and expertise of real estate and Mexican culture with my friends, family, and clients.
